10 Things You Should Do Before Leaving Fort Hunter Liggett

Since you will be working on land that was formerly William Randolph Hearst’s properly, it is only fitting that you see this magnificent palace he once called home.  Make sure to decide on your tour(s) and get your tickets ahead of time.

#2 Madonna Inn!

You must experience a dinner at the Madonna Inn’s Goldrush Steakhouse!  This spectacularly pink palace is an absolutely exquisite place to stay and dine.  Located right off of the US 101 highway in San Luis Obispo and established in 1958 it is known for its themed guest rooms and waterfall urinal.  It's most known for room 137: Caveman.

*Tip* This is an amazing and affordable experience for New Year’s Eve.

#3 1122!

Eleven Twenty-Two is a hidden speakeasy cocktail lounge.  It sits in the heart of down town Paso Robles on the backside of Pappy McGregor’s Irish Pub.  When you arrive push the doorbell to the right of the door, this will notify the door attendant.  The speakeasy grill or peep hole will open on the door and the door attendant will ask how many in your party.  They will shut it briskly after letting you know your expected wait time.  Once in, you will be briefed on the rules, find a seat in one of the booths or pony up to the bar.  There is nothing simple on the menu, these are all handcrafted amazing cocktails.  Our favorite is the Hickory Whisperer which is a smoked Old Fashioned. Upon leaving, don’t forget – there is one way in and one way out.  If you fall in love with this place (as we did), you might want to inquire about becoming a Spirit Society member.  Members get a limited edition challenge coin, a 10% discount and priority access during the week and invitations to society only events and more.

#4 Wine Tasting!

There is over 300 wineries in the Paso Robles area, many of which offer complimentary tastings or discounts to military.  There are many wine events throughout the year.  Daou Vineyards is a must see.  Tastings are free for military personnel and 1 guest.  Enjoy spectacular views while sipping on some amazing wine.  The wine here is pricey and unfortunately, they do not offer a military discount on wine or merchandise.

#5 Vision Quest Safari Bed & Breakfast!

Vision Quest Ranch is a unique bed and breakfast nestled in the outskirts of Salinas and is an amazing experience as you wake up to roaring lions and tigers on a ranch that makes you feel you were transported to Africa.  Your stay includes a continental breakfast and complimentary access to the zoo.
